Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed

McKay’s Compadre Zoysia seed is perhaps our most high-quality and popular grass seed at McKay’s. It is an improved variety of Zoysia that provides a beautiful lush cover, dark green leaf tone, medium leaf size, and enhanced density.

All Zoysia grass varieties are spread by surface stolons and underground rhizomes. The presence of rhizomes also increases the hardiness of the variety, for winter survival or drought tolerance.

Compadre Zoysia is drought, heat, and salt tolerant. It also stands up well under heavy wear and tears. It is recommended for shaded areas in Northern Australia but will always prefer being in a more sunny position.

Compadre Zoysia is a warm-season Asian grass type and does not tolerate cold weather very well. This means its active growth starts in early or late spring, depending on location and peaks in the hot summer months. It should only be planted in the warmer regions of Australia where other warm-season lawns are grown, such as Buffalo and Couch. It is not recommended for Victoria or Tasmania as it does not perform well in frost.

Seeding rates:

New Lawns: 15 grams per square meter (1.5 kg/100m2).

Overseeding: 8 grams per square meter (approx 1.5kg/200m2).

Description

Compadre means ‘Companion’, and Zoysia Compadre has been developed, grown and encouraged for it’s suitability to grow so well amongst other grass types in a companion setting.

Different grasses are usually mixed together to overcome a weakness in one grass type, by mixing another grass type which excels in the area of where the main turf falls short.

While Compadre Zoysia can be grown as a beautiful lawn in its own right, it has been specifically bred to blend with Tall Fescue to provide a year round green lawn for regions where the Compadre Zoysia may go dormant and brown off in Winter.

A soil pH between 6.5 and 7.0 is optimum.

Sowing Tips:  Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. Zoysia grass seed needs light to germinate, so the seed should be at or very near the surface of the soil for the best germination results. A planting depth of 5mm or shallower gives the best germination results, a deeper planting depth will prolong the germination and establishment time. Zoysia seeds are very small and can be difficult to evenly broadcast. To ensure best coverage and avoid seed wastage we recommend combining the seed with sandy loam and using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area.

Optimal Planting Time:  Compadre Zoysia is a warm season grass and sowing should occur when night time temperatures are consistently above 18 degrees celcius and day time temperatures exceed 28 degrees.  Allow 3 months for establishment before the onset of Autumn or any significantly cooler weather. Best sown in warmer temperate and tropical zones of Australia.

Germination: 28 days-6 weeks, climate dependent. Can be up to approximately 8 weeks in cooler climates or sub-optimal conditions. A soil temperature of 18-25 degrees at a 5cm depth will give the most immediate germination results.

Water: With the seed so close to the surface, it should be watered quite frequently with light water applications until germination is complete. This will keep the seedlings from drying out as they sprout. Once established it tolerates low water and drought conditions well.

Fertilising:  To ensure successful germination it is essential to apply a starter fertiliser when sowing your grass seed.

First Mowing: First mowing when reaches 5cm in height. Zoysia tolerates mowing heights of 1.5 – 3 inches.

Mowing Frequency: More frequent mowing will also increase the turf density of any of the Zoysia varieties.

Disadvantages of Compadre Zoysia:

  • Does not tolerate cold well
  • Does not tolerate frost
  • Recommended only for the warmer climates of Australia
  • Not for Tasmania or Victoria

Ideal Usage: Lawns, Commercial Landscapes, Sporting Fields, Golf Courses.
