Elite Backyard Blend

Our Elite Backyard Blend is primarily a cool climate variety that is best suited to temperate regions around Australia. It contains both summer and winter active seed types, making it a perfect grass for both warm and cold conditions seen in these regions. It requires additional watering on days of higher than average temperatures.

The Elite Backyard Blend is ideal for shady conditions and holds up well in frosts. The Sports Turf Ryegrass and the Creeping Red Fescue make this grass hardy enough to withstand a reasonable level of traffic.

This seed mix contains the highest quality Ryegrasses and Fescues: Sports Turf Ryegrass, Turf Tall Fescue, Creeping Red Fescue, providing a soft, green lawn that looks amazing all year round.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 30 grams per square meter (3kg/100m2).
  • Overseeding: 20 grams per square meter (2kg/100m2).

Description

The Elite Backyard Blend is a combination of 35% Sports Turf Ryegrass, 35% Turf Tall Fescue, 20% Creeping Red Fescue, and 10% McKays Slow Release Fertiliser. Please click the links to each individual seed for specific details and further information.

Sowing Tips: Sow into soft topsoil or sandy loam. Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure the best coverage and avoid seed wastage we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. The soil must remain damp throughout the germination period of both seeds and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing, through irrigation or natural rainfall. Adequate water supplies need to be maintained until the grass is fully established.

Optimal Planting Time: Autumn and Early Spring are the best times to sow this seed.

Germination: 14-21 days, climate and condition dependent.

Water: Keep moist throughout the entire germination period until the roots are well established. Requires additional watering during Summer and unseasonally high temperatures to ensure the roots do not die off.

Fertilizing: McKays Slow Release Fertiliser is included in this blend. An additional application is recommended approximately 6 weeks after sowing during the active growth phase.

First Mowing: When grass is between 5-7cm tall. This should indicate that the roots are strong enough to withstand the mowing process.

Mowing Frequency: Mowing requirements will increase during the active growth phase. This may mean mowing is required 1-2 times/week depending on the desired height of the grass.

Disadvantages of Elite Backyard Blend:

  • Requires more water than warm climate grasses in summer and unseasonally hot days
  • May need occasional oversowing to maintain a thick and luscious lawn

Prompt and efficient service.

Order for 5 kilograms of McKays "Backyard Blend" grass seed ordered online arrived within two days. Arrived in the morning and was broadcast across a new lawn that same afternoon. Prompt supply service was much appreciated. I cannot fault the online product ordering and supply offered by McKay Grass Seeds. Waiting upon the new lawn to develop into a backyard garden eye-catching outcome.

So far so good, looks lush

Laid Mckays elite backyard blend on approx 150mm of good top soil. Purchased 10kg and spread thick over about 150sqm. Sugar cane mulch spread on top. Water 2-3 times per day. Seeded end of September in Canberra, not yet hot although pretty dry and windy. First shoots within about a week. Pretty even cover after 2.5 weeks. Happy with how it’s all looking, a couple patchy bits but think that’s my fault. Based on how it’s looking absolutely recommend. I expect I’ll wait a few months and see how it comes up, then re-seed over the patchy bits. Also, getting lawn seed delivered was so easy! And I know exactly what I’m getting. Will definitely purchase from McKays again.

It's been 4 weeks now, did all the preps as advised, its coming along slowly, gradually thickening, don't know that much of the red fescue has come up, still watering 3 times a day, have more seed and intend to oversow at 7 weeks. Hopeful that it's going to be a good outcome. My area is only 22 sq metres in fairly shaded area and the seedlings seem to be tolerating that fairly well. I have learnt a fair bit in the process, particularly that sowing with seed requires patience and it may be a while before lush lawn eventuates.
I've found McKays good to deal with and I suspect the result will be better than anything you can buy at Bunnings.

Seeds did not grow

I covered some bare patches in my lawns after pulling out unwanted clover but none of the seeds grew despite my best efforts. There was no problem with the ordering process and they arrived very quickly but unfortunately they just haven’t grown.
