Bermuda Couch Grass Seed

Key Features: Drought Tolerant | Hardy | Sports

Bermuda couch (also known as Sahara Couch) is a warm-season grass that is ideal for the Australian climate.

A favorite of Australian golf courses and suburban lawns alike,  Bermuda Couch is extremely hardy.  The grass has an extensive root system, giving it the best chance of surviving tough drought conditions. Bermuda Couch is superior in drought tolerance compared to common Couch and many other bermudagrass varieties.

Bermuda Couch has runners that spread both above ground (called stolons) and below ground (rhizomes). This makes the grass great at “self-repairing”, and any bare patches that you may have from your initial sowing of seed will, more often than not, be quickly filled in without any need for a second sow.

Minimal expertise is required to manage and maintain a Bermuda Couch lawn, and the ongoing management cost is low.

Couch grasses become dormant in winter and may discolor, particularly in sub-tropical climates. Note: A Couch surface can be oversown with a Perennial Ryegrass to improve winter performance. This also works to protect the Couch from heavy traffic during dormancy.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2)
  • Overseeding: 5 grams per square meter (1kg/200m2)

Please note: Seed may be coated for protection and to enhance germination. Batches may vary.

Description

Bermuda (Sahara) Couch is tolerant to saline or poor quality irrigation water. It is also highly wear tolerant. It produces rhizomes and stolons which allow recovery from damage from below-ground and across the surface. It is a good choice where a low thatching type is required. It is a native grass to the African Savannah and India.

Optimal pH: Bermuda Couch performs best in soils with moderate acidity (pH 5.8-7.0), but tolerates more alkaline conditions.

Sowing Tips: For best results, sow in full sun in well-drained soft topsoil or sandy loam. Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure the best coverage and avoid seed wastage we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. The soil must remain damp throughout the germination period of both seeds and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing, through irrigation or natural rainfall.

Optimal Planting Time: Spring to late Summer (if access to watering) with soil temperatures consistently above 18 degrees. Cooler climates should plant in Summer. For cooler regions, we also recommend McKays Couch Blend.

Germination: Under ideal conditions, germination may begin within 7-10 days (climate and season dependent). Allow 10-21 days for full germination. Full coverage may be attained in 4-6 weeks. More time may be needed for establishment if sowing early or late in the season.

Water: Keep moist until the roots are well established, water consumption after this time should be significantly reduced.

Fertilizing:  Requires generous Nitrogen applications for optimum performance during the growing season. Fertilizer application is recommended approximately 6 weeks after sowing during the active growth phase.

First Mowing: When grass is 1/3 taller than the desired mowing height. Bermuda Couch performs best at mowing heights of 13-38mm.

Mowing Frequency: 1-2 times/week during active growth and remove no more than 1/3 of the leaf per mowing.

Mowing Tips:

  • The lower you mow it, the more often you need to mow
  • In shady areas increase the mowing height of the grass
  • Mowing is the best form of weed control

Disadvantages of Couchgrass:

  • Does not tolerate shade well.
  • As it is a warm climate grass it can lose its color and become dormant over winter, particularly when exposed to frosts.
  • It may go into summer dormancy after a prolonged drought, but it survives with an intact surface which will green up rapidly whenever rainfalls.

Seed & package details: 100% Sahara Bermuda Couch. Please note: This seed may be coated with a product used to improve germination and protect the seed.

Independently tested: 99% Min Germination, 98% purity. A seed testing certificate is available upon request.

Great service

Ordered my Bermuda Couch Grass Seed at the time McKays were waiting for new stock to arrive. I needed the seed in a hurry and McKays organised with their supplier to drop ship directly to me to avoid a double handling delay. Very much appreciated

Bermuda Couch Grass Seed

I recently purchased some Cough seed to oversow my lawn, it's been approx 10 days and the seeds are shooting, I tried other seed brands previously, this seed appears to be far better at this point

Seed

I have given a fairly low review for a number of reasons not really the fault of your seed. Was hot when seed was planted, storms created some wash, ants built nests under seed and is now shooting patchily. Didn’t really have best conditions.
